Jim Moran Heart and Vascular Research Institute

Jan and Jim Moran

Jim Moran's Legacy with Heart Research

Jim Moran donated $1 million to Holy Cross Hospital for a cardiovascular intensive care unit after undergoing life-saving, open-heart surgery here in 1988.  In 2000, Jim and Jan Moran and JM Family Enterprises, Inc. contributed $6 million for the construction of the Jim Moran Heart and Vascular Center. The Center specializes in the education, prevention, detection and treatment of cardiac and vascular diseases.

Not content to stop there, in 2006 they created a $26 million challenge - The Moran Challenge - and pledged $10 million to create the Jim Moran Heart and Vascular Research Institute to bring early-stage clinical trials in heart and vascular medicine to our community. The Moran Challenge matched $1.00 for every $1.60 contributed up to $16 million for this vital research. In 2017, with the generous support from our community, the Moran Challenge was met. While the fundraising challenge was completed, donations are always needed to continue the immensely important work conducted at the Research Institute.

The vision of the Jim Moran Heart and Vascular Research Institute is to develop cutting-edge clinical trials for the diagnosis and treatment of heart, coronary artery and vascular disease.  We are pursuing an advanced scientific and clinical research agenda, enabling Holy Cross Hospital and its physicians to offer patients access to advanced clinical therapies that would otherwise not be available.

Our vision is to:

•    Advance medical discoveries into effective therapies
•    Offer new and innovative therapies earlier to patients in our
•    Apply high-level, cutting-edge science to clinical practice providing
      more options to patients
•    Attract leading physicians, studies, and therapies from around the
world for the advancement of science and better care of our patients

Thanks to the Jim Moran Heart and Vascular Research Institute, Holy Cross patients have access to the newest and most promising heart and vascular treatments which they would not have had at another community hospital.

During his treatment at Holy Cross Hospital, Jim Moran was cared for by Holy Cross physician Dr. Richard Luceri, a renowned cardiac electrophysiologist, author of numerous scientific articles and contributing author for multiple cardiology book chapters.  Dr. Luceri carries on the legacy of Jim Moran at the Institute as a member of the Institute’s Clinical Advisory Committee and our Research Oversight Committee, providing oversight of the Institute’s research activities.

To date,  $26 million has been contributed from generous community donors, Jim and Jan Moran and JM Family Enterprises, Inc., to support the work of the Institute.  While we have achieved our goal, there’s more work to be done both in the area of development and in clinical research collaborations.

At the Jim Moran Heart & Vascular Research Institute, we are in a unique position to attract research studies evaluating the most advanced technology and therapies for heart and vascular disease. We continuously strive to expand our offerings with more clinical trials and potentially life-saving treatments to patients not available through current standard of care. By collaborating with industry, academic medical centers and other translational research institutions, the Jim Moran Heart and Vascular Center and Research Institute at Holy Cross Hospital are poised to be the preeminent heart and vascular providers in South Florida and a bridge for extending therapeutic advances to our patients and community.

This same spirit of innovation has resulted in the establishment of other Research Institutes at Holy Cross Hospital focusing on Cancer Research, Orthopedic Research, Pain Management Research and Neuroscience Research. In addition, we have expanded the scope of our research to include federal and state grants, as well as a significant number of publications and presentations.

The spirit of innovation and cutting edge clinical care extends throughout Holy Cross Hospital to ensure that we remain vigilant in the pursuit of the best care and care options for our patients in South Florida. It is the persistence of hope and faith of our patients that directs our research institutes to tirelessly pursue new treatments.

One major achievement has resulted from our collaboration with the Trinity Health Innovation Program and the Massachusetts General Hospital Vaccine and Immunotherapy Center. Holy Cross' innovation in the use of B Cells to expedite wound healing resulted in a grant award in the amount of $502,000 to further study the use of B Cells to treat diabetic obese mice with an eye on developing clinical trials for diabetic patients with chronic wounds. The results can be seen in a recent publication in the Journal of Wound Repair and Regeneration.

We are seeking partners like you to support our vital work. For more information on donating to the  Jim Moran Heart and Vascular Research Institute, please contact the Holy Cross Development Office, 954-229-8562 or
